JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- People in Janesville have more debris to clear and repairs to make after a tornado moved through the city Saturday night, and volunteers at the Salvation Army are trying to get them food and cleaning supplies.
Jason Rysdyk, Salvation Army Lieutenant, says the past five days since the tornado touched down have been a whirlwind.
Volunteers have been in and out of their Janesville post all week putting together food totes and buckets from Home Depot, or Blain's, filled with cleaning supplies, work gloves and tarps as families work to clear debris from their yards.
Rydyk says just Wednesday dozens of people came to Salvation Army for supplies, and he's expecting evening bigger crowds next week.
"If they come in, they get a tote, they get a bucket and then if there's other requests that are needed, water [or] stuff like that, we handle," Rysdyk said. "We walk it out into their car and put it in the car for them."
Rysdyk says they'd like to be able to offer this aid as long as possible, but with the crowd sizes they anticipate, he's not sure how long that will be. Especially when it comes to food.
"Shelf stable food, soups, mac and cheese, all that stuff is a huge need," Rysdyk said. "We run through it like there's no tomorrow. This [table] was full earlier, and it's empty already. So that is always a huge need. Tarps are a big need right now, especially with flooding and stuff going on too."
Rysdyk says there are chaplains at check-in in for people who need emotional support too.
