EVANSVILLE, Wis. (WKOW) -- A local nonprofit horse rescue is looking for volunteers after almost doubling its population over the last month.
BoMeric Horse Rescue celebrated its official opening just under a year ago.
"We take in abused, neglected, ill, elderly and slaughter-bound horses that don't have anywhere else to go," Founder of BoMeric, Camille Skotnicki, said. "We rehab them, we spoil them. We spend lots of time with them, get them resocialized."
But, more horses means they need more help. Skotnicki says no experience is necessary. As a volunteer gets more comfortable with the horses, they'll get more responsibilities.
"Throwing hay down and just making sure everybody's doing good and keeping up on their health. It's not complicated work, but it is farm work," Skotnicki said.
Carleigh Koper and her son Coen started volunteering after making a visit to donate leftover funds they raised for their own pet.
"The horses are amazing. It's a great place," Carleigh said. "They do great work here, the horses are very well taken care of, very spoiled and we get to be the recipients of all the fun."
The Kopers say working with the horses at BoMeric is therapeutic and so enjoyable, they forget it's work.
"These horses obey their people their entire lives. And then when they're no good anymore, they just get shipped off. That's no way to treat a horse or any creature for that matter," Carleigh said.
