MOUNT HOREB (WKOW) -- People in Mount Horeb are stepping up to support students after a student with a gun was shot outside Mount Horeb Middle School Wednesday.
"It's really not surprising to see Mount Horeb come together like it has. It's such a tight knit community and we really care about each other and we're almost like a big family," President and CEO of the Mount Horeb Area Chamber of Commerce, Rachel LaCasse-Ford, said.
LaCasse-Ford says people in Mount Horeb have been leaning on one another to get through everything that happened Wednesday. One Mount Horeb High School alumnus came up with the idea for Viking yard signs. Once word got out, they got more pre-orders than expected.
"We happily took over that role of being the kind of professional, outward facing organization coordinating this," LaCasse-Ford said.
But people have made much more than yard signs. Local businesses have made Viking posters, coloring pages, thank you notes for first responders and ribbons for awareness.
"At no cost to anybody, we are giving you ribbons to be able to put on your mailboxes or your trees. Red stands for Mount Horeb, the green stands for mental illness awareness and the orange one is for gun violence awareness," Co-owner of Firefly Events, Heidy Lang, said.
Lang says Firefly announced their ribbons early Friday morning and less than 12 hours later they had over 100 orders. Lang says she's happy to do what she can to help Mount Horeb heal.
"Be kind, you just don't know who could be sitting next to you," Lang said. "I believe everybody wants to hug, whether you know it or not."
